Pregnant?
Jack couldnât have been more surprised if Lizzie had announced she was a vampire. He felt as if the earth had slipped from beneath him.
âButââ He tried to speak, realised that he needed air, took a breath and tried again. âBut you told me last night thereâs no man in your life.â
âWell, yes, thatâs right.â
The anxious tremor in Lizzieâs voice and her nervous pacing were not helping Jackâs concentration.
âWhatâs happened then? Has he left you?â
âNo, Jack.â
Bewildered, he lifted a hand to scratch at his head. This was not making sense.
Lizzie stopped pacing and stood by the window, chewing her lip as she parted the curtain and looked out across the sun-drenched landscape. Despite his shocked bafflement, he could still taste her kiss, could smell the subtle fragrance of her hair, could remember the happy burst of longing heâd felt when sheâd grabbed him and kissed him. As if the floodgates had opened.
He longed to haul her back into his arms and kiss the soft, sulky tilt of her mouth. Coax a smile.
Sheâs not available.
Sheâs pregnant.
The thought dug into him. Pregnant. His brain clamoured with questions. Who had made her pregnant? Why? When?
Just looking at her, he couldnât tell that she was expecting, but he wondered now if the lush fullness of her breasts and hips had been enhanced by the presence of her growing baby.
A baby. For crying out loud, her body was a haven for another manâs child. How could she have told him there was no man in her life?
Jack challenged her. âThere has to be a father.â
Lizzie turned from the window and gave a faint shake of her head.
âWhere is he?â Jack demanded.
âI donât know.â
âFor Godâs sake, Lizzie, who is he, then?â
Her chin lifted a notch higher. âI donât know his name. All I can tell you is heâs six feet three, and thirty-six years old, and heâs an engineer with an interest in classical music and long-distance running.â
Jackâs jaw sagged.
What the hell? How could she rattle off the guyâs vital statistics, yet claim that she didnât know his name?
âHeâs donor number 372,â she said tightly.
Donor?
Jack blinked. âYour babyâs father is a sperm donor?â
âYes.â
Shock ripped through Jack. He was well acquainted with artificial inseminationâit was a common practice in the cattle industryâbut why would a hot-blooded, attractive woman like Lizzie need a clinical insemination? It didnât make sense.
He stared at her as she stood there, her flowing curves outlined against the rectangle of blue sky. He remembered her eagerness both this morning and last night.
Why would a beautiful, passionate woman like Lizzie Green reject a living, breathing lover and choose an anonymous donation in a syringe?
âHell, Lizzie, if you wanted a baby, all you had to do was put the word out. Blokes would have been lining up.â
I would have been there at the head of the queue.
Jack grimaced, aware that after two kisses the possessiveness he felt for her was totally unjustified.
On the far side of the room, she leaned against the wall, looking down at her hands, twisting them anxiously.
